The Activation Brief

Our mandate was to urgently roll out awareness and educational campaigns due to the outbreak of COVID 19 in Zimbabwe.

Key targeted areas for activation are Mutare, Chipinge, Harare and Marondera and Ruwa.

We have deployed a total of four units to date with a further two set to begin activations on Tuesday 14th of April.

Harare units are focusing mainly on awareness and information dissemination.

Mutare and Chipinge units are working closely with Goal teams as well as the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare to do a combination of daily activities as needed and directed by the teams on the ground.  These include awareness and sensitization in urban and rural areas as well as assistance in the feeding campaigns in key areas.

One unit from Harare has now switched to working closely with the Mashonaland East team and is currently doing awareness and sensitization.

Key observations

  • Total people reached for the Month of April was 1,227.917

  • The campaign has gone well in all areas we have visited. It has been widely accepted and understood.

  • The retention in Manicaland is much better due to the extended time we can spend with the people at the feeding stations.

  • Retention and uptake have been good, and on average marginally higher among women and the elderly. Messaging “hooks” have been fine-tuned during the campaign in order to encourage men to take more interest and buy into the protocols.

  • In all regions, poor food security and lack of good information played a huge roll in peoples’ negative primary perception of both the National Lockdown and Covid-19. Fortunately, due to this campaign, many of these attitudes were transformed.

  • Access to clean running water, which is essential to fight Covid19, is a very big issue. Most areas we visited do not have access to running water and people must travel long distances to collect water from the few public boreholes. This causes issues with crowding at water sources, and in turn, breaks down any formal social distancing efforts and makes self-isolation impossible

  • The affordability and availability of hygiene supplies and PPE are among the largest issues faced by all people we spoke to.

  • Overall the messaging has been very well received, and in many areas, the only source of credible information apart from the local health works and clinics.
