Campaign Reports

Summary

Week 1

The Mutare team is currently focused on audio awareness in Mutare and its suburbs.
This team has an attachment from the Provincial Health Directors office and the ZRP. This has meant that not only are we able to provide the standard audio messaging but also give access to key medical and security information via our attached team members. This has proven invaluable.

Our team has also assisted with the identification of key hot spots and passed this information directly to the relevant institution for immediate action to be undertaken.

People in Mutare don’t have a good grasp of what COVID-19 is and much of the time are completely ignorant of the facts.

Key issues in this area revolve around food security and access to clean water.
Many markets are crowded and there are little to no precautions are taken.
Since the start of the campaign, there has been a marked improvement in social distancing and hand washing, many homes now have a bucket at the entrance. However, access to soap is an issue, mostly for financial reasons.

Week 2

The Mutare team is now supporting the feeding program by providing crowd control and information to these communities on Covid19.

This team has an attachment from the Provincial Health Directors office and the ZRP. This has meant that not only are we able to provide the standard audio messaging but also give access to key medical and security information via our attached team members. This has proven invaluable.

These communities are better informed about covid19 but still lack detailed information on how to protect them selves. The local heath workers have done a good job in these communities to try and prepare them.
Key issues in this area revolve around food security and access to clean water. Access to soaps and sanitizers. Is also an ongoing issue.

Despite the health workers best efforts many of the clinics and hospitals do not have stocks of basic medication and PPE. They do not have adequate supplies to handle a Covid19 outbreak.

Since we entered these areas there has been a marked improvement in social distancing and hand washing. The smaller communities all seem to be banding together to try and prevent Covid19 from taking hold.

Week 3-4

The mix of doing public awareness and supporting the feeding programs has meant that our team has reached a very large number of people.

The people of Mutare and its surrounding areas were not particularly well informed about Covid-19. As was expected, the further from the urban centre of Mutare we went, the worse it got. With the exceptions being the feeding stations we were supporting, who had been educated to varying  degrees by the Goal team.

Like all the places we have visited during this campaign, water, food, and hygiene products are extremely hard to find, let alone the ability of these people to afford them. The situation is made increasingly difficult  due to the lingering effects of 2019’s Cyclone Idai and the poor rainfall  of this year.

The communities we have encountered have been very grateful for the information and time our team has given them. There has been great retention and a genuine concern shown by these communities and their leaders.
